What is Work-Based Learning?
The Work-Based Learning (WBL) program allows qualified students who have mastered skills in pathway areas and/or enrolled in any level course the opportunity to work at an approved job placement to gain valuable work experience while receiving CTAE course credit.
A job placement (paid or non-paid) may be arranged by the WBL Coordinator, the CTAE pathway teacher, or an approved part-time job arranged by the student. Work-Based Learning placements may also be a part of an academic course sequence and includes Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Language Arts, Advanced Academics, World Languages, Fine Arts, JROTC, and CTAE. Through these student and industry engagement initiatives, students combine experience-based learning, skill-based learning and knowledge-based learning, which provides a solid foundation for life-long learning and success.
How does Work-Based Learning benefit students?
Students gain marketable skills, while in high school, that match current and future workforce demands.
Relevant work experience aids in a successful transition to career related employment.
Students learn to identify and articulate their strengths, passion and interests. This provides the foundation for planning their education and career planning.
Students learn about professionalism through soft skill (essential skill) education. This area of education includes learning about the importance of appropriate business attire, time management, effective communications, teamwork, positive attitude, work ethics and more.
What are the student admission requirements?
The student must be in grades 11 or 12 and at least 16 years old and in good academic standing.
The student must have reliable transportation.
The student must have an acceptable attendance and discipline record.
The student must have a teacher recommendation.
The student must have demonstrated a positive attitude and be a hard-working individual that can work well with adults.
The student must complete and submit the WBL Application Form on the school’s website before registration. The application will be available in January.

- Do I have to already have a job before I apply? No, you just must be willing to try to get a job through applying at different workplaces & following up with phone calls. Mrs. Varner can help you get a job in the community.
- Can I use my current job for BucsWBL? Yes
- Do I have to work every day during 4th period? No, you just must average 7.5 hours a week (hours are submitted to Mrs. Varner each month). If you are in a sport or after-school activity, you may just work on the weekends.
- Can I do an internship? Yes, you may do an internship that is paid or unpaid. See Mrs. Varner for more details. The idea is to place you in an area that you may want a future career.
- Can I take BucsWBL more than once? Yes, it is available for you to take it each semester of your Junior and Senior years. There may be availability for you to take it two periods in one semester depending on your schedule.
- What does this class look like daily? You are required to sign in online for attendance each day. This class does not meet live after the first day. You are required to check the class board weekly for due dates. You will have a monthly due date that requires you to fill out a form, turn in a Time sheet or pay stubs to show your hours at work. You will also turn in two employer evaluations throughout the semester.
