Dear Allatoona Families,

As we look toward the last few weeks of our first semester, I want to provide you with a few updates. Our hope is for your child to finish strong and successfully gain their course credits, so they are on track entering second semester. We encourage you to monitor your child’s grades in ParentVue and stay in communication with your child’s teachers if any concerns arise. As always, our counseling department and administrative team are available to help with your student’s school-related needs.

Our Athletic department has shifted from Fall sports to Winter sports, and I hope that you will continue to support our Buc student-athletes. Our flag football team, wrestling team, basketball teams, and swim and dive team are in full swing. Our Fine Arts department has been busy as well. We have Winter concerts planned from chorus, orchestra, and band along with the annual Fine Arts Gala, which will take place on Tuesday, December 5th, at 7:00 PM. I encourage you to join us as this is always an excellent way to get in the swing for the holidays!

The district just released our commencement date, Friday, May 24th, at 9:00 AM in Buccaneer Stadium; senior families, please look for information on graduation as we move into second semester. Our Counseling department has plans for each of our grade levels as they work to support your students on their path to graduation. Please take note of the following:

12th Grade: Save the date Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024, the highly recommended Financial Aid Informational Night at 6:00 PM in the Theater.

10th and 11th Grade: PSAT scores are available to students who tested in October.  Students should have received an email with directions for how to access their scores.

9th Grade: The Annual 9th Grade Advisement Schedule will be released in late January.

Over the next six weeks, please mark your calendars with important dates:

  • Monday, December 18th, 2023 – Early Release – 1st and 2nd block Final Exams
  • Tuesday, December 19th, 2023 – Early Release – 3rd and 4th block Final Exams
  • Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, through Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024 – Winter Break
  • Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024 – Student Holiday/Staff Workday
  • Thursday, January 4th, 2024 - First day of Spring Semester
  • Tuesday, January 16th, 2024 – Mandatory Dual Enrollment (DE) Virtual Information Meeting for any student interested in pursuing DE for next school year. More details will come by email from the counseling department.

Final Exams are scheduled for Monday, December 18th, and Tuesday, December 19th. The Final Exam Schedule is included with this message and posted on our school website. As mentioned above, both of those days are early release days, so all students will leave at 11:30 AM. If your child must miss a final exam for any reason, please note that exams may not be administered early per CCSD guidelines. Please email both your child’s teacher and Mr. Samuel Sanford to plan for the make-up exam date on January 3rd, 2024.

Allatoona is a busy campus with many events before and after school. Many times, we have not only our students and community on campus, but guests as well. We always strive to have a safe and orderly campus environment. One key element for a safe campus is courteous drivers who are cautious. Please encourage your student drivers to adhere to safe and cautious driving practices. The speed limits in our parking lot are 5 mph and 15 mph in our driving lanes. Our campus officers will be giving tickets to those drivers who create an unsafe environment for our pedestrians and other drivers. Parents, please talk with your child and encourage your young drivers to be safe drivers on campus.

As I close, I would like to ask you to stay connected with us. The Allatoona website is https://www.cobbk12.org/allatoona, and the Allatoona Athletics website is https://allatoonabucs.com/. You can find Allatoona on social media as well: Facebook (@allatoonahs and @allatoonabucs); Instagram (@allatoonahighschool); and X (Twitter) (@allatoona_hs and @toona_athletics).

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!

 Allatoona Principal Summer Greetings!

Dear Allatoona Family,

The faculty and staff of Allatoona High School are looking forward to seeing all of our Buccaneers on campus on Tuesday, August 1st. Allatoona has the longstanding tradition of being “Anchored in Excellence,” and this year we continue to strive for excellence through academics, the arts, and athletics.

Student safety is a top priority on the campus, and I am happy to announce our district has added a second  campus officer to our team. The campus officers are on campus each day monitoring our school and building relationships with students and staff.  Students should know that when they come to school, they are safe.  The safety protocols put in place by the Cobb County School District, which include regular safety drills, ensure no student or parent should need to worry about anything but learning during a school day.

We believe in high expectations for student achievement for all students. Our teachers and staff work each year to grow their professional knowledge and work with their colleagues to create engaging learning experiences that will prepare Allatoona students for success as they look toward college and a career. The district has offered all students a laptop to enhance their learning experience inside and outside the classroom. If your child has not accepted a CCSD laptop, we highly encourage you to go to ParentVue to opt in and give them access to this valuable learning tool. If you need help with your child’s CCSD laptop there are helpful links here for you.  As a district, all classrooms will utilize the Cobb Teaching and Learning System (CTLS) for our students to access classroom tools and learning resources. If you are new to our school community, this link will help you become familiar with the CTLS system.

We believe that students should be rewarded when they have done well and face consequences when the rules of conduct are not followed.  Student recognition is an important part of what we do at Allatoona, and we will continue to celebrate students when they shine in academics, the arts, and athletics. Consequences for those that violate the CCSD Code of Conduct, and the expectations of Allatoona High School will be handled through progressive discipline. For students who engage in behaviors that result in 5 or more cumulative days of out of school suspension (OSS), they will lose the privilege of parking on campus for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year. Links for the Allatoona High School Student Handbook and the Family Information Guide can be found on the AHS web site and will come home with your child on the first day of school.

Finally, we believe that your child should be well rounded, and many of these life skills can be gained outside the classroom. We encourage all students to join a club, select a fine arts group, or play a sport. In addition to finding friends, the lessons taught through participation in these activities last long after they have left the halls of Allatoona and will benefit them for many years to come. Allatoona offers a wide variety of opportunities for your child, please explore these at the Athletics and Extracurricular links on our web page.

An upcoming school event you don’t want to miss is the Buccaneer Bash on July 28th.  The freshmen and new AHS students and parents should meet at 9 a.m. in the main gymnasium.  At Buc Bash, you will be able to review your schedule, tour the school, meet teachers, join clubs, order yearbooks, obtain parking decals, purchase spirit wear, and purchase the all-access Buc Pass. We welcome our upperclassmen to campus in the afternoon from 12:00-1:30 p.m. to make purchases and walk their schedule for the upcoming year. Please note not all teachers may be available in the afternoon for a visit as we work to prepare for the first day of school.

We encourage you to come out to Open House on August 24th at 6:30 p.m. to meet your child’s teachers.  We have added quite a few new faculty members that include several departments.  We have new staff in English, Spanish, science,  fine arts, physical education, special education, counseling, and a new assistant principal.  Our fall Open House is a great time for you to connect with staff once your child has had a chance to experience their classes.

Included are some procedures and helpful links:

*Morning Car Rider Drop off-  Please be aware morning traffic approaching the campus is heavy from 7:50-8:15. Please plan accordingly.  As you enter the campus, car rider drop off is only in front of the school along the curb.   Please do not drop students from the driving lane in the loop in front of the school blocking the flow of traffic or in the stadium lot.  The front doors and the student parking doors open at 7:15. All students will wait in the cafeteria until the 8:00 bell.

*Afternoon Car Rider Pick-up- Our afternoon traffic has increased.  We are now encouraging parents to enter the campus, park in the stadium lot in a parking space and text your child to let them know where to find you in the lot. You will be able to exit from the stadium entrance or the traffic light.  When this method was used last year, it improved the flow of cars at the traffic light.  You may also use the traditional car rider option at the curb in front of the school, but when doing so, please pull forward beyond the flagpole to take advantage of all the space.

*Tardy to School or Class- Students are expected to be in their block 1 class at 8:20 a.m. If a student is not, he/she must sign in tardy for school at the Attendance Office. In order for a tardy to be excused, the student must have a medical note or note with a parent signature stating the reason for the tardy. Attending class and arriving on time for each class are critical for student success; consequences are earned once students accumulate 5 tardies.  See the student handbook for details.

*Phone calls: Please add Allatoona High to your contacts (770-975-6503) so when our staff makes a call you will recognize the number and take our call.

Allatoona Families:

We will be holding our Buc Bash on Friday, July 28th! Buc Bash is an orientation time for freshmen and students new to Allatoona.  It is also an opportunity for our returning upperclassmen to walk their schedule and purchase needed items such as Buc Passes and Buc Spiritwear. This opportunity is optional for upperclassmen. Please have your Allatoona student download Synergy StudentVue to their phone prior to arriving on campus so they can access their schedule on the day of Buc Bash. Please review the attached Buc Bash schedule for times regarding each grade level. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Allatoona Families,

It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of a sophomore who attended our school. Joelle Keili was an amazing young lady and had a great influence on us during the time she was at the school. She touched many of our students and faculty with her active involvement in the Allatoona High School chorus. Joelle was killed in a car accident on Monday evening. Please keep the Keili family in your thoughts.

When we learned of Joelle's death, we shared this information with her current teachers late this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, an announcement will be made regarding Joelle's passing to our student body. It was important for all the children to have the same information to avoid rumors which can start so quickly. Counselors will visit all of Joelle's classes and will be available to support students who need to process their grief throughout the day.

Your child may experience grief, and you may see some of the following emotions:

  • Tearfulness
  • Physical complaints - stomachaches, headaches, etc.
  • Bad dreams
  • Irritability
  • Clinginess
  • Inability to concentrate
  • A temporary dip in grades
  • More pronounced fears; of dying, of the dark, of you dying, of walking home alone, etc.

Here are some ideas to help your child with grieving:

  • Let your child talk about the death or draw pictures of what he or she felt happened
  • Let them express their feelings
  • Offer them loving, touching support
  • Allow them to be sad and to cry
  • Let your child ask questions and answer them as simply as you can. If you need to, it's okay to say; "I don't know how to answer that. Perhaps we can find someone who can help us."
  • Offer support and structure in completing homework.

If there are any questions or concerns about your child's behavior, please reach out to your Allatoona counselor for additional support.

Thank you for your support of the Keili family at this time. Our hearts and prayers are with the family.

Sincerely,

Candace Wilkes,

Principal

COMMENCEMENT TICKETS – MAY GRADUATES – ALLATOONA HIGH SCHOOL

Graduation is fast approaching! To ensure that this is a smooth process for all involved please familiarize yourself with the process included in this communication. All guests must have a ticket for admission to the graduation ceremony at Allatoona. To comply with this requirement, the Cobb County School District has implemented a new procedure for allocating commencement tickets.

Guest tickets for commencement will be requested online by the graduate via the Student Portal. The graduate will request the number of tickets desired for their guests. However, the graduate is not guaranteed the number requested. Graduates and parents/guardians should discuss the number of tickets the graduate should request for the family.

Instructions to access the Student Portal and request tickets are included in the attachment labeled: Graduation Tickets Directions. The Student Portal for ticket requests by graduates will open on Monday, March 6. Graduates who do not submit a request will receive 2 tickets. The deadline for requesting tickets will be Friday, March 24. Once tickets are allocated, graduates and parents/guardians will be notified that the number of tickets granted may be viewed in the Student Portal.

Please note that all guests are required to present a ticket for admission to the ceremony. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. We look forward to a great day and a wonderful commencement ceremony.

October 19, 2022

Dear Allatoona Families,

Last week, we began our second quarter of the 2022-2023 school year, and as always at Allatoona High School, we are incredibly busy!

Teachers of nine-week courses such as Economics, Personal Fitness, and Health have finalized grades, and these are available for you to access in ParentVue. As we know, the second nine weeks will go more quickly than we realize. Please encourage your student to finish the semester strong and continue to stay in communication with your student’s teachers if any concerns arise.

We strive to prepare our students for life after high school, and our Counseling Department is hard at work getting our Bucs ready. A little over a week ago, the entire Junior class met with our counselors to learn about Junior Advisement, and now the counselors have started their individual meetings with each junior and their parents to look at their progress toward graduation and plan for college and career. Counselors are also providing an opportunity for colleges and military representatives to visit our students during the lunch hours and/or virtually at 5:00 PM. These visits can be found in Naviance and on our website calendar. AP testing registration is also open, and all information about this process can be found at the AP link on our website.

Our Athletic Department is transitioning from Fall to Winter sports seasons with region tournaments wrapping up and some teams advancing to the early rounds of state tournaments. Please come out to support our Buccaneer student-athletes. Our Fine Arts Department has been busy as well preparing for their GHSA One Act Play. They will perform Wiley and the Hairy Man from Wednesday, October 19th, to Friday, October 21st, followed by the 6AAAAAA One Act Play competition hosted here at Allatoona on Saturday, October 22nd, during which Allatoona performs at 9:40 AM. The last week of October will be our annual Superhero Week charity event to benefit Turner’s Heroes culminating in our Varsity Football game that Friday, October 28th, against Sequoyah, and I hope you will continue to support that wonderful organization begun in honor of one of our own.

Our goal is to do our best to communicate with our school community. We update our website weekly and have added our daily morning announcements, which can be found under “Find it Fast.” Prior to Winter Break, we will have two hybrid PTSA-sponsored Coffee Talks with the Principal, Friday, November 4th, and Friday, December 2nd, both at 9:00 AM. If you would prefer to attend from home, a Zoom link will be available on the PTSA website, or you can join us in person in the Media Center Reference Room. I always enjoy this opportunity to meet with all of you!

The vast majority of families have opted into the student laptop initiative, and we have distributed over 1,600 to students. It is NOT too late for your student to receive a laptop before school any day in the Media Center. We do want every student to bring their laptop every day so students and teachers can take full advantage of its tools in the classroom. The student laptops are a great asset in our classrooms for both our teachers and students. While you may have a laptop for your student, we want you to opt-in through ParentVUE so they can take advantage of the online learning opportunities Allatoona teachers are planning. The new student laptops easily access school programs and provide a safe and secure portal for all online learning. In addition, these safety precautions are in place when your student logs on at home. There is a repair kiosk in place in our Media Center for any issues, and we are fortunate to have a technician who efficiently repairs laptops.

Over the next weeks, please mark your calendars with holidays and Early Release days :

  • Tuesday, November 8, 2022 – Student Holiday/Staff Workday (Election Day)
  • Monday, November 21, 2022 to Friday, November 25, 2022 – Thanksgiving Holidays
  • Thursday, December 15, 2022, and Friday, December 16, 2022 – Early Release for Final Exams
  • Monday, December 19, 2022 through Monday, January 2, 2023 – Winter Break
  • Tuesday, January 3, 2023 and Wednesday, January 4, 2023 – Student Holidays/Staff Workdays

As I close, I would like to make you aware of exciting news for one of our administrators and bittersweet news for the Allatoona Community. Mr. Christian Barnes has accepted a position as the new Principal for Rome Middle School in Rome, Georgia. He has been a blessing to our community, and we will miss him, but we wish him the very best in his future endeavors. We know that once a Buc, always a Buc!

Please stay connected with us. The Allatoona website is https://www.cobbk12.org/allatoona, and the Allatoona Athletics website is https://allatoonabucs.com/. You can find Allatoona on social media as well: Facebook (@allatoonahs and @allatoonabucs); Instagram (@allatoonahighschool); and Twitter (@allatoona_hs and @toona_athletics).

Allatoona Welcome Letter SY 2022-23 (Updated Links)

July 19, 2022

Dear Allatoona Family,

The faculty and staff of Allatoona High School are excited to welcome all our Buccaneers back on campus on Monday, August 1st. Each school year brings the promise of new beginnings, rekindling knowledge, and exploring  new pathways. This year we plan to focus on our school vision of being “Anchored in Excellence” and want to share some of our beliefs for the upcoming year.

We believe that our number one priority is student safety. Students should know that when they come to school, they are safe.   The safety protocols put in to place by the Cobb County School District ensure that no student or parent should need to worry about anything but learning during a school day. One critical element for school safety is our campus officer who is on campus each day monitoring our campus and building relationships with students and staff.

We believe in high expectations for student achievement for all students. Teachers will continue to build their professional knowledge and work with their colleagues to create engaging, highly rigorous lessons so that students are secure in knowing they are receiving a top tier education. As a district, all classrooms will utilize the Cobb Teaching and Learning System (CTLS) for our students to access classroom tools and learning resources. If you are new to our school community this link will help you become familiar with the CTLS system.

For students who engage in behaviors that result in 5 or more cumulative days of out of school suspension (OSS), they will lose the privilege of parking on campus for the remainder of the 2022-23 school year. Links for the Allatoona High School Student Handbook and the Family Information Guide can be found on the AHS web site.

We believe in being a community school of excellence. Students at Allatoona earned more hours of community service last year than any other school year. Multiple programs and opportunities are offered to earn community service hours throughout the school year. We encourage students to participate in these opportunities and realize the importance of giving back while a part of the Allatoona family.

Finally, we believe that your child’s education doesn’t stop when the school bell rings. We encourage all students to join a club, fine arts group, or play a sport. In addition to finding friends, the lessons taught through participation in these activities last long after they have left the halls of Allatoona and will benefit them for many years to come. Allatoona offers a wide variety of opportunities for your child, explore these at the Athletics and Extracurricular links on our web page.

We welcome our upperclassmen to campus in the afternoon (12th : 12:00-1:00, 11th  & 10th : 1:00- 2:30), to make purchases and walk their schedule for the upcoming year.

Included are some procedures and helpful links:

*Morning Car Rider Drop off- Please be aware morning traffic approaching the campus is heavy from 7:50-8:15, please plan accordingly.

You may also use the traditional car rider option at the curb in front of the school, but when doing so please pull forward beyond the flagpole to take advantage of all the space.

*Tardy to School or Class- Students are expected to be in class at 8:20 a.m. If a student is not, he/she must sign in tardy for school at the Attendance Office. For a tardy to be excused, the student must have a note or a parent signature stating the reason for the tardy.

*Phone calls: Please add Allatoona High to your contacts (770-975-6503) so when our staff makes a call you will recognize the number and take our call.

The teachers and staff are here to help you and your child be successful in everything that they do, and we can’t wait to watch them show us how they are Anchored in Excellence. We are so fortunate to live and work in an amazing community with outstanding students and parents! As always, thank you so much for your support! We are looking forward to a fantastic year.

Regards,

Candace Wilkes

Dear Allatoona Families,

As we enter the final quarter of this school year, I want to provide you with a few updates.

Teachers with quarter courses finalized grades earlier this week, and those grades will soon be accessible in ParentVUE. For semester courses, we are halfway through the second six weeks. Please encourage your student to finish this semester strong and to stay in communication with your student’s teachers if any concerns arise.

As you have likely heard in the news recently, social media challenges have become an issue in many schools, and we too face these challenges at Allatoona. Many of our students frequently use Instagram and Snapchat for communication.  Many times, our students are using this platform to send video messages, images, and messages they would never say to someone in person.  They pass along disparaging, inaccurate, and inappropriate messages which create negative relationships between students thus impacting student learning and the climate on campus.  My current position on social media it that it is doing more harm than good for our students and school community.  I would like to encourage you to take time to have conversations with your student(s) about these disturbing trends and your student’s appropriate use of social media.  I am also asking that you closely monitor your student’s social media usage. Public safety can assist you with social media issues that occur outside of the school’s discipline code.   For more information on talking to your student about dangerous trends on social media, Common Sense Media offers a great deal of insightful information.  This is a critical topic for our students and families, and I value the partnership between home and school that allows us to create a safe and positive school environment.

With a focus on student learning, we are glad most of you have elected to allow your student to take advantage of a CCSD student laptop. Currently, we have distributed over 1,300 student laptops. It is NOT too late for your student to receive a laptop. The student laptops are a great asset in our classrooms for both our teachers and our students. While your student may have a personal laptop, it will not connect as easily to the CCSD network, so we want you to opt-in through ParentVUE so they can take advantage of the online learning opportunities Allatoona teachers are planning. The new student laptops easily access school programs and provide a safe and secure portal for all online learning. In addition, these safety precautions are in place when your student logs on at home. There is a repair kiosk already in place in our Media Center for any issues, and our technology staff is always willing to assist.

The extracurricular events on campus are in full swing, and our Buccaneers are doing an outstanding job.  Our Athletics department’s Spring sports are going strong, and events are taking place on campus on a daily basis. Please remember that all practices are closed for the safety and security of our student-athletes, but we welcome you to attend games and support our athletes and teams. All tickets are available on GoFan. Our Fine Arts department is also quite busy. Allatoona Band has their annual All That Jazz auction and dinner coming up on March 31st, and tickets are available on allatoonabands.org. Drama is preparing for its next performance in mid-April. All music courses are currently preparing or participating in their Large Group Performance Evaluations (LGPE) over the next couple of weeks in March.

As Senior parents know, graduation is quickly approaching on Friday, May 27, 2022, at 9:00 AM, and we will host graduation on our campus this year.  The optional Baccalaureate service hosted by PTSA will take place at Cedarcrest Church on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at 3:00 PM.  A timeline for spring senior events was provided to your seniors in February at a class meeting, and we sent a parent copy via CTLS a couple of weeks ago. There are many other events scheduled, and more information can be found on the Seniors Resource page on the website.

Our dates for Spring Break are Monday, April 4, 2022, through Friday, April 8, 2022. The weeks following spring break will pass quickly for our students.  Teachers of End of Course classes, as well as, AP courses are diligently preparing them for their upcoming assessments.  Our goal is for students to keep their academic focus through the end of the semester.  Please reach out to our counselors, teachers, and support staff with any questions you may have.

As I close, I would like to ask you to stay connected with us. The Allatoona website is https://www.cobbk12.org/allatoona, and the Allatoona Athletics website is https://allatoonabucs.com/. You can find Allatoona on social media as well: Facebook (@allatoonahs and @allatoonabucs); Instagram (@allatoonahighschool); and Twitter (@allatoona_hs and @toona_athletics) if you want to follow events or athletics on campus.

Sincerely,

Important Prom Information - Please Read

Parents,

The Allatoona prom will take place tomorrow evening at Zoo Atlanta from 8:00-11:00 pm. We want to remind you to have a conversation with your student and explain that all Cobb County School District rules and polices apply at this event. It is our practice at Allatoona High School to charge and prosecute students when laws are broken at Allatoona High School events. Security will be provided by City of Atlanta police officers, therefore, if an arrest occurs, you will be called by a representative of the city of Atlanta to address your students’ issue. We don’t anticipate anything happening, however, we would be remiss if we did not make sure all parties were aware of the consequences well in advance. We look forward to a wonderful event and are so happy we get to provide our students with this opportunity after being unable to this past year.

All students and guests need to bring a photo ID. If driving to prom and parking, there is a $6 parking fee that can be paid with credit card or through the park mobile app on their phone.

Thank you!

Student Parking Notice - Please Read

All STUDENT PARKING IS SOLD OUT.

Parents please understand that county policy states all vehicles parked on Allatoona Campus must be registered and have a parking decal affixed to the windshield. Please confirm your student driver has purchased a parking decal and placed it on the vehicle. Please recall this has been communicated throughout the year.   In fairness, students who have followed the parking procedure should not have their space taken by another student who has not followed the expectations for parking on campus.

Starting Monday February 28th we will be towing unauthorized vehicles from campus.  Allatoona student parking lot is assigned parking by space number. If your student drives, they have been assigned a spot and must park only in the space assigned.

We understand unexpected needs come up.  To address this, our parallel spots are for emergency 1 day parking. To use one day parking, the student must park and enter the building prior to the beginning of the school day to purchase a $1-daily parking pass. That is good for 1 day and you cannot purchase more than 7 in a semester. If students park in the one-day spots without a one day permit they can possibly receive ticket or could be towed.

It is never appropriate for students to park on the football stadium side of the school during the day.  That is reserved for faculty only.

Thank you for your understanding.

Fall 2021 Principal Letter

November 2, 2021

Dear Allatoona Families,

As we enter the final six weeks of this first semester, I want to provide you with a few updates on this school year.

Teachers are finalizing grades, and you will soon be able to access your student’s 2nd six-week report card in ParentVue. Please encourage your student to finish this semester strong. Please stay in communication with your student’s teachers if any concerns arise. There are only a few short weeks left to this semester, and as we know, they will seem to fly by!

Our Athletics department is transitioning from Fall sports to Winter sports, and I hope that you will continue to support our Buc student-athletes. Our Fine Arts department has been busy as well, with the One Act Play just concluding this past week, earning Region Champion at the competition on Saturday, October 29th. Our Fine Arts Gala will take place on Thursday, December 2nd, at 7:00 PM, and I encourage you to join us as this is always an excellent way to prepare for the holidays!

Prior to Winter Break, we will have two hybrid PTSA-sponsored Coffee Talks, Friday, November 5th, and Friday, December 3rd, both at 9:00 AM. If you would prefer to attend from home, a Zoom link will be available on the PTSA website, or you can join us in person in the Media Center Reference Room. I always enjoy this opportunity to meet with all of you!

We are making great strides in distributing the student laptops with over 1,000 students opting-in and receiving their laptops thus far. It is NOT too late for your student to receive a laptop.  At the beginning of second semester, we want every student to bring their laptop every day so students and teachers can take full advantage of its tools in the classroom. There is a repair kiosk already in place in our Media Center for any issues.

As you have likely heard in the news, social media challenges have become an issue in many schools. I would like to encourage you to be aware of these and to monitor your student’s social media usage and have conversations with them about these disturbing trends. The most notable examples have come from TikTok with challenges such as September’s “devious licks” where students were encouraged to steal items from schools and post about them and October’s where students were encouraged to slap their teachers and post videos of those assaults. Please be aware that these challenges can lead students to behavior that could result in school discipline consequences or even criminal charges.  For more information on talking to your student about these dangerous trends, Common Sense Media offers a great deal of insightful information.

Community Service Opportunity - Super Hero Night is Coming!

Super Hero night is coming, and Athletic Leadership is asking all Allatoona students and parents to be a part!

In 2018, Allatoona High School alum Turner Cockrell lost his courageous fight against cancer while attending college at Vanderbilt. In his honor, a nonprofit was started, Turner’s Heroes, whose purpose is to raise funds for discovery grants to fight pediatric cancer. Next week you have a chance to be a part of this fight and for students to earn community service hours.

Students have a chance to earn hours three different ways:

  1. Purchase a Turner’s Heroes t-shirt on MyPaymentsPlus or at the HELM desk for $10 for 1 hour of service*
  2. Purchase a Turner’s Heroes cape on MyPaymentsPlus or at the HELM desk for $10 for 1 hour of service*
  3. Donate a new, wrapped toy to be delivered to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for pediatric cancer patients for up to 4 hours**

T-shirts and capes will be sold in person and online through Wednesday, October 27th. After that, they must be purchased the night of the game at the pirate in the stadium. Toys are accepted the entire week in the front office and the night of the football game at the pirate in the stadium. A receipt with the student’s name must be included with the toy (s) to be given credit for hours earned.

All students and fans should wear their capes and shirts to the game on Friday, October 29th, as the Bucs play host to Lassiter. That evening students will be collecting change at the game for donations, so make sure to bring some cash to donate to this worthy cause. Don’t like to bring cash to game? Don’t worry-you can donate via credit card at this link https://bit.ly/Allatoona4Turner.

See any member of athletic leadership for more details on this event and for information on how you can help be a part of the fight against pediatric cancer.

*a maximum of six hours can be earned from the purchase of capes and t-shirts

**donated toys must be from the suggested items sheet attached- $1=1 hour for a maximum of 4 hours earned

Thanks,

Action! Student Laptops

Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to share that student laptops are in and ready for distribution.  The student laptops will be a great asset in our classrooms for both our teachers and students. While you may have a laptop for your child, we want you to opt-in through ParentVUE so your student can take advantage of the on-line learning opportunities our teachers are planning.  The new student laptops easily access the school programs and provide a safe and secure portal for all on-line learning.  In addition, these safety precautions are in place when your child logs on at home.  There is a repair kiosk in our media center for any issues.

FAQ’s

  1. Will classroom instruction change to mostly on-line? No
  2. Will it give my child an advantage to have a laptop in class? Yes
  3. What are examples of how it will be used? Online Delta math practice, on-line quick assessments, research, composing papers/assignments in class, etc.

We encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity for your child to have a laptop until they graduate from Allatoona High School.  To receive a laptop, the enrolling adult must login to ParentVUE and select Student Device Liability Agreement from the menu on the left.  If you have issues accessing your ParentVUE account, please contact Allatoona High School.

Community Letter re: Close Contacts

Parents and Guardians,

At the August CCSD School Board meeting the Covid guidelines for students were adjusted.  The summary is below.

When any student tests positive for COVID-19 they will be required to isolate for 10 days according to the GA Department of Public Health guidelines.

The day symptoms begin is day zero. Then the student should observe ten days of isolation with a return to school on day eleven, if the student is fever free for 24 hours and symptoms have improved.

Students who are identified as a close contact at school and are asymptomatic, will be required to isolate at home for the first three days from the date of close contact  with the positive person and return to school if they remain asymptomatic.  (Since the new guideline has been in place, many close contacts have not been directed to isolate 3 days due to several days passing since exposure to the positive person and delayed test results.)

  • Upon return students will need to wear a mask while on school district property for an additional seven days after exposure.
  • If a close contact exhibits any symptoms, they should stay home and be monitored by their parent or guardian.

Please be aware as symptoms occur and parents determine covid testing is needed, the return of test results can be delayed.  We understand that timely notification to our families is important. Unfortunately, we can only notify you once the parent/guardian has called or emailed the school test results. While we have asked families to notify our nurse immediately, that is one element we can’t control.

As a result, the school may not receive test results for a few days, this will impact the timeline for close contact notification from our school staff. As always, if your child is sick please keep them home from school and monitor their health.

Thank you for your patience as we work through this process.

Urgent Graduation Update

Dear Allatoona Family,

Although tonight’s graduation will continue to proceed as scheduled, in preparation for rain, we are asking that those who attend tonight’s graduation ceremony be prepared for possible pauses in the ceremony.

We know that such interruptions can be frustrating, and hope they do not occur. However, in our efforts to celebrate our graduates well and not inconvenience parents and guests, we intend to hold graduation tonight even if it is interrupted by weather.

Thank you for your patience.
